In Spanish there are several verbs that would translate to English as “to be”. The first one to learn is the verb ser. It is a very common verb that is used for specific situations. To remember when and how to use ser use the acronym DOCTOR.

- El libro es azul. The book is blue.

- Yo soy maestro. I am a teacher. (Note: don´t use the indefinite article when saying occupations. Yo soy un maestro.)
Characteristics
- Ella es muy linda. She is very pretty.
- Es la una y media. It is one thirty.
- Nostros somos de Chile. We are from Chile.
Relationships
- Ella es mi mamá. She is my mom.
